Mike Postich, Palmetto Propane’s CFO, said they were looking for a solid general ledger package with more intercompany capabilities that could integrate with Cargas Energy (implemented in 2019) and provide timely data in dashboards. According to Postich, the maintenance requirements of their premise-based accounting system and ongoing technical issues were among the primary drivers for moving to Sage Intacct.

He explained that under the former system, the IT department had to initiate software updates on Palmetto Propane’s server almost weekly, sometimes installing updates on every user’s computer as well. The accounting department struggled with the system randomly blocking out users and problems accessing it remotely through their VPN.

“It created a lot of chaos for our IT department because it was hosted on our server. The whole situation was way too cumbersome. We didn’t want to maintain software; we just wanted to use it,” shared Postich.

He said they also wanted to streamline the accounting department’s efforts through automation to eliminate manual entry of sales and cost-of-sales data from Cargas Energy and avoid redundant transaction entries across accounts payable, accounts receivable, and other systems.

According to Postich, they knew Sage Intacct would meet their accounting needs, providing more capabilities and deeper insights than their former solution, while also offering a more robust integration with Cargas Energy.

“It was a good fit for the size of our company, and the integration piece was very important to us,” Postich shared. “We knew Cargas had a lot of experience integrating Intacct with Cargas Energy.”

Palmetto Propane began working with Cargas in June 2025 to prepare for a September 1, 2025 go-live date. Postich said that System Consultants Lilly Ruiz and Kristy Fritz, the Cargas team members leading the implementation and integrations, brought in-depth product knowledge to the table.

“They’re both very grounded in accounting and know what’s required for a successful Cargas Energy integration,” he shared.

He also credited the expertise and skills of Project Manager Danielle Thomas, System Consultant Marvin Wharton, and Director of Professional Services Christie Livingood for a smooth transition to the new solution.

According to Postich, the accounting team now has more general ledger and multi-entity functionality, enabling them to establish a uniform set of account codes across multiple companies. Also, sales and cost of sales data automatically imports into Sage Intacct, substantially reducing the need for manual intercompany entries each month. 

“If anyone on our accounting team has to work from home, it’s not a problem. They just log right in via the cloud,” he said. “Our IT department definitely saves time because they don’t have to update the software on our server—they’re not dealing with VPN tunnel issues anymore.

Postich said that Palmetto Propane wanted to leverage Sage Intacct’s other enhanced integration capabilities to make payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable tasks more efficient. 

For example, the BILL expense reporting integration has eliminated manual data entry, and payroll tax processing has been automated through the BambooHR integration. 

“We’re saving time, have more flexibility, and faster data availability,” he said.  “We also have more controls and improved data security.”

Sage Intacct’s dashboards have been a game-changer for Palmetto Propane. Rather than only receiving performance data at the end of each month, the executive team can track KPIs throughout the month.

Postich said the dashboards that Cargas helped develop give their CEO a better sense of where the company stands at any given time and whether they’re ahead or behind budget.

“Where do our margins stand? Should we adjust pricing? At any time during the month, we know if we need to make any adjustments to meet our goals. That kind of data available on a dashboard allows us to be more proactive without having to maintain spreadsheets,” explained Postich.
