What is Software as a Service (SaaS)?

Learn about the benefits of the Software as a Service purchasing model.

Software as a Service (also known as SaaS) is a software delivery and purchasing model. You pay for the software with a monthly or annual licensing fee, and the provider “leases” the software to you.

What Are SaaS “Leases”?

Consider the many ways businesses acquire software:

  • Purchasing a software installation CD
  • Downloading software directly from the internet
  • Installing software on office computers or servers

In these three scenarios, the software lives on one of your machines and you have a perpetual license to use it—it’s available to you forever.

Rather than living on-premise, SaaS solutions live on servers owned by your software provider. This means you do not have a perpetual license; you are leasing software access through your provider and accessing the solution via a web browser or application.

If you’ve ever used one of the following applications, you’ve already experienced the power of SaaS software:

  • Evernote
  • Netflix
  • Google Workspace
  • HubSpot
  • MailChimp
  • Shopify
  • Slack
  • Zoom
  • Amazon Web Services

Why Should My Business Consider SaaS?

SaaS solutions offer businesses like yours several benefits:

  • SaaS implementations are faster and cheaper than server installations
  • SaaS solutions can be used anytime, anywhere through a web browser or application
  • The software provider handles your solution’s IT needs and upgrades, saving you time and money
  • You can purchase the features you need now with the flexibility to add in in the future, so your software can seamlessly scale as your business grows

SaaS Solutions for Business

SaaS solutions are becoming increasingly popular with businesses because they offer a more efficient, cost-effective alternative to on-premise solutions.
