TABLE OF CONTENTS

Acumatica is a cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution that brings finance management and operational efficiency to organizations of all shapes and sizes, but is it a good fit for your business? Our review breaks down the pros and cons of Acumatica, as reported by real users.

What is Acumatica?

Acumatica is a cloud ERP system designed to manage financials, streamline operations, and serve as the heart of an organization’s tech stack. It comes in six editions; one edition covers General Business, while the other five include features for specific industries—Construction, Retail, Manufacturing, Distribution, and Professional Services. This allows Acumatica to diversify its software for unique business types while maintaining strong core functionality in areas that matter across industries.

What are the Pro’s and Con’s?

Acumatica is a contemporary ERP. It was established in 2008, and the software was built to live in the cloud and ensure unilateral data access and collaboration for team members across organizations. In reviews, customers cite the following as the top benefits of Acumatica:

Pros

Unlike some modern ERPs, which are built on legacy systems or adapted from on-premises, Acumatica was first built in the 21st century. That means its developers learned from their predecessors and were able to create a unique solution that catered to burgeoning demand for top-of-the-line, innovative ERP software. Here’s what customers see as the main benefits for Acumatica:

Cloud Platform. Cloud software like Acumatica offers users anytime, anywhere access, as long as they have an internet connection. This structure is a departure from on-premises systems, which require servers to be maintained in an organization’s office. The cloud is accessed remotely, eliminating the need for on-site hardware and costly maintenance.

Industry Specializations. Many ERPs integrate with industry-specific modules to supplement their base features, but building this type of tech stack can be costly and comes at the risk of synchronization issues. Acumatica’s industry editions for construction, retail, manufacturing, distribution, and professional services address this issue by bundling general business features with capabilities unique to these industries. Integrations are possible, but the base packages for Acumatica’s industry editions offer features like project costing, parts and materials management, and more.

Customization. Acumatica is built for unique industries and business types, so its developers understand that every organization has its own needs. In addition, Acumatica is accessible to team members across organizations, whether they’re in sales, marketing, customer service, accounting, HR, or another department. To make the software user-friendly for everyone, Acumatica allows users to customize their dashboards and layouts to get at-a-glance insights into the data that matters to them.

Cross-Functionality and Integrations. Acumatica goes beyond accounting software, offering a comprehensive suite to manage operations and boost efficiency. Its six core features—financials, reporting, payroll, customer management, project accounting, and mobile—can be enhanced for greater functionality. With robust APIs for seamless third-party integrations, Acumatica streamlines tasks like document management, e-signatures, logistics, and equipment maintenance, fostering collaboration and breaking down silos across teams.

Support and Education. Acumatica provides free educational resources and offers support through certified Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), who handle implementation, customization, and support. This approach allows Acumatica to focus on enhancing its product. Because ISVs vary in their offerings, customers are encouraged to research and choose an ISV that best fits their needs in experience, availability, and capabilities.

Cons

Although Acumatica reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some hiccups have led to complaints and feedback for developers. Here’s what some negative Acumatica reviews had to say:

Customization Complexities. The process of tailoring Acumatica both during and after implementation can be difficult, even though the software is built to be flexible. Adding features, modules, or custom reports that aren’t available out of the box requires technical support and additional payments. However, choosing the right software partner plays a major role in determining the ease of software customization.

Cost. Acumatica’s price is based on monthly transaction volume, not the number of software users. While this benefits organizations with several users who need to access the software, small companies or those with fluctuating monthly transactions may find the cost overwhelming. This is especially true for companies that require more customization during implementation.

Implementation. While out-of-the-box implementations are straightforward, complex workflows often require more effort to set up properly, especially when adding custom functionality to the software that requires help from an ISV. Customization can be challenging, costly, and time-consuming, especially without frequent communication between the buyer and the ISV.

Integrations. While Acumatica strives to create a frictionless data synchronization experience with open APIs, not every solution integrates cleanly with the software. Legacy systems that weren’t designed for cloud deployment can struggle to integrate with Acumatica, which creates a challenge for Acumatica users and their ISVs.

Features

Acumatica offers a robust and customizable solution that includes a wide range of features. You can select the modules that align best with your operations. Acumatica features are dependent upon whichever Acumatica Base System is purchased and implemented.

More broadly, the features offered by Acumatica for general business purposes fall into six main categories. If you would like to learn more about Acumatica Features, check out our What is Acuamtica blog article.

Pricing

At its most basic, Acumatica’s annual subscription price starts at $6,000 and includes 5–10 user licenses, 1,000 monthly transactions, and a selection of core financial features. However, most mid-sized businesses will spend $25,000 or more on annual subscription costsincluding more users and a higher transaction volume. In addition, implementation costs can range from $60,000 to $100,000+.

What Customers Say About Acumatica

Thousands of Acumatica customers have rated the software on sites like G2, Gartner, Software Advice, and more. These reviews are overwhelmingly positive and are complemented by numerous industry and publication awards.

Acumatica’s industry-specific editions have received praise as well, with the Construction and Distribution modules being named high-performing leaders by G2’s Grid® Reports for those industries.

Certain Acumatica features have received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with the top features including functionality for accounting, inventory and warehouse management, and manufacturing and distribution. However, Acumatica’s newest modules, such as its Professional Services edition, have not been around long enough to generate much feedback.

Why Choose Acumatica

Is Acumatica ultimately worth the cost, or should you consider an operations suite from Microsoft or a best-in-class accounting system from Sage? In short, it depends on what your company wants to accomplish with ERP software.

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, you could benefit from implementing Acumatica:

  • Do you want a centralized platform for accounting, operations, and more?
  • Do you want to use top-of-the-line cloud software created for modern businesses?
  • Do you want unlimited user access to your business data?
  • Do you have specific industry needs, such as job costing and inventory management, that your operational software could handle?
