Is Sage Intacct an ERP System?

We answer one of the most common questions we get.

Is Sage Intacct an ERP system?

Depending on who you ask, you’ll hear a mix of answers—yes, no, maybe, so.

It’s a question we regularly encounter from prospective clients who want to know more about Sage Intacct’s capabilities.

So, is Sage Intacct an ERP solution?

While the software has some of the functionality that ERP software has, we believe Sage Intacct is better termed a best-in-class accounting solution.

Why Is Sage Intacct Best-In-Class Accounting Software but Not an ERP?

Traditionally, ERP solutions are associated with operations, so you expect to find functionality for accounting and areas like manufacturing, distribution, supply chain and inventory management, and HR and payroll.

While Sage Intacct provides some features to address those operational elements, the software shines as an accounting and financial reporting solution. It was developed to be “best-in-class” in that area.

If you’re primarily looking for a robust accounting platform, Sage Intacct can handle your needs. If you’re looking for a solution to support the operations of your business or industry, ERP software may be a better fit.

While Sage Intacct may not have these capabilities built in, it’s possible to create a solution with this functionality through integration using a best-in-class approach. Sage Intacct has integration partners that offer HR, payroll, and operations software that work seamlessly with its accounting software.

And although Sage Intacct’s operations functionality may not be an ideal fit for some organizations, depending on your business or industry, it might meet your requirements. For example, Sage Intacct may not be a good fit for a wholesale distributor, but retailers can easily use Sage Intacct’s inventory module to track physical goods. While POS functionality is not built into the software, you can use Sage Intacct’s Sales Order capabilities to capture transactions or take advantage of the numerous POS integrations available to add this functionality to the system.

Benefits of Sage Intacct as an Accounting Solution

As best-in-class accounting software, Sage Intacct offers many advantages to companies with complex financial tracking needs.

Will Sage Intacct Meet Your Business’s Needs?

Sage Intacct pairs well with people-centric, service-based organizations (like consulting firms) that need to track time against projects, bill their customers, and monitor their accounts receivables. It can aptly handle inventory and purchasing situations.

If your business has significant manufacturing or wholesale distribution requirements, you may find gaps between what Sage Intacct offers and your needs. But this doesn’t necessarily mean Sage Intacct isn’t the best accounting solution for you. With its marketplace of partners supplying ready-made solutions to close functionality gaps, Sage Intacct might be a great fit.

However, your needs may fall outside Sage Intacct’s available integration options. If that’s the case, you may want to explore complete ERP solutions with more advanced operations functionality.
